I quickly became disillusioned with the book, however, due to the portrayal of women, especially Theo's mother, Palma. I have always wanted to learn ASL, which was one of the reasons I was drawn to this book. I can relate to the unfairness of children finding it necessary to translate for adults and could feel Theo's internal struggles. As a bilingual person and a teacher of bilingual students, I found the beginning of the book intriguing. But with the help of Ivy and some of her friends, Theo is finally able to change his family's dynamics and find time to plan his future.more
